THE MOVIE

Jean-Paul GOUDE

The world of Shiseido ZEN is brought to you in collaboration with French photographer Jean-Paul GOUDE.

THE IMAGE OF ZEN

Like the other side of the moon, this luxurious side of Zen isn't usually seen, yet it is real. Zen can laugh, can dance, and can live fully. Jean-Paul Goude gives it life in illustration while evoking the sensitivity of Japan. He created an imaginary "ribbon woman" to represent the Spirit of Zen, using allegory rather than logic. The ribbon does not start from the bottle; the woman emerges from it, but is not obliged to go back in. She is freed from the bottle, liberated. Goude's image of traditional Japan, represented by the black dots on her forehead, was inspired by a Kenji Mizoguchi movie based on an ancient Japanese story, which portrays a deeply mysterious and mystic world. He includes the traditional markings as a symbolic element of Japan. Along with the red gloves and string, this element accents and gives impact to the visual.

Jean-Paul GOUDE Profile:

For more than thirty years, through drawing, poster design, photography, and video, Jean-Paul Goude has made an impression, in every sense, on our imagination. From the tops of the 60's to the legendary Esquire magazine of the following decade, from the New York of Andy Warhol and mixed cultures, to Grace Jones, for whom he was Pygmalion, from the spectacular French Revolution Bicentennial Parade and Galeries Lafayette ------ Goude has triumphantly captured, time after time, the spirit of his age.

The recipient of many prestigious awards in the field of film advertising, photography and design, he was awarded the legion of honor by François Mitterand.
